Sea Scouts Take to the Skies

Sea Scouts Take to the Skies19.04.2009

Two young people have just returned home to Solihull after spending their Easter holiday learning to fly with the Royal Navy. Jon Hotchkiss and Tom Barnfield, both aged 17, were awarded Flying Scholarships by the Fleet Air Arm Officers Association. The pair from Knowle Sea Scout Group learned to fly K13 Training Gliders at the Royal Naval Gliding Club at Lee-on-Solent, Portsmouth. They were accommodated in the wardroom at HMS Collingwood and also visited HMS Iron Duke, a Type 23 Frigate.

Jon, who wants to join the Royal Navy as a Warfare Officer, said "learning to fly was a fantastic opportunity and gave us both a real insight into the Fleet Air Arm and life as a pilot or observer in the Royal Navy".
