Sea Scouts Renew Affiliation
19.11.2008
Knowle Sea Scouts renewed their affiliation with the worlds most advanced warship last week when the Deputy Weapons Engineering Officer from HMS Daring paid them a visit. The type 45 destroyer is the first of its class and is due to enter service next summer. Lieutenant Dick Whittington gave the Sea Scouts an up to date presentation about the ship and answered questions about careers in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines. He returned to Knowle again the following Sunday to attend the Remembrance Service at the Parish Church and to take the salute for the annual parade through the village.
Lieutenant Whittington said, "It was wonderful for me to visit Knowle Sea Scouts recently and an honour to take the salute at Knowle's Remembrance Ceremony. It is fitting, as HMS Daring reaches completion, for us to re-inforce our affiliations prior to our departure from Glasgow for our inaugural voyage south to our home port of Portsmouth. Captain Paul Bennett, HMS Daring's Commanding Officer, looks forward to welcoming some Sea Scouts to the Ship in the new year.
Fourteen year old Watch Leader Bethan Charnley said, "It was great to have an update on how HMS Daring is coming along and to see just how powerful the ship will be. We're all looking forward to visiting her in the new year, and some of us will be lucky enough to join the ship at sea in the spring".
Knowle Sea Scout Group is sponsored by the Royal Navy and became affiliated to HMS Daring in 2006.
