Sea Scouts Prepare for Adventure
03.07.2008
Canada is on the cards for six local teenagers this summer, but it will be far from your average holiday! The team from Knowle Sea Scouts will be undertaking a ten day wilderness expedition in Northwest Ontario. They'll cover over 150 miles by canoe and foot whilst travelling through a vast network of remote lakes and dense forest.
The team have devoted the past eighteen months to organising and fundraising for what really will be, the trip of a lifetime. In total, they'll spend a month in Canada and visit Winnipeg, Red Lake and Toronto. As well as the expedition, which will count towards their Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award, the team will be doing community projects, meeting local people, and visiting tourist attractions.
George Walker (16) said "We know its going to be tough, but we've trained hard. As a team, we'll need around 500kg of food and equipment for us to survive the ten days and hacking through dense forest carrying this and canoes will be demanding. We've worked on our fitness and strength, canoeing skills, campcraft and even learnt how to respond to bear encounters".
Phil Krstic (17) added "We've had a great deal of help to get to this stage, and we really want to thank all our sponsors and supporters. Its not all hard work. After the expedition, we're really looking forward to visiting places like Niagara Falls".
The team leave in two weeks, and will be met off the plane by local Scouts before being welcomed to Canada by the Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba.
