Sea Scouts Pass Inspection
17.06.2009
The Royal Navy visited Solihull on Tuesday, fortunately arriving by car, to carry out the biennial inspection of the local Sea Scouts. More than 80 young people from Knowle Sea Scout Group assembled at Olton Mere Reservoir to be inspected by Lt Cdr David Griffiths RN, in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Solihull. The Sea Scouts demonstrated their skills in sailing, canoeing, kayaking, pulling, powerboating and raft building, before being formally inspected on the shore.
The Sea Scouts were delighted to pass the inspection and the Group will continue to be one of only 101 throughout the world to be sponsored by the Royal Navy. At the end of the evening a number of presentations were made. Lt Dick Whittington RN, from the Group's affiliated ship HMS Daring, presented a certificate from Her Majesty to Assistant Scout Leader Katie Newlands on her becoming a Queen's Scout. Lt Cdr David Griffiths RN presented a donation from the Royal Navy to eight Sea Scouts undertaking a wilderness canoe expedition in Canada this summer. Finally, the Mayor of Solihull announced that Watch Leader Rob Hotchkiss would be serving the borough as the Mayor's Sea Scout for this municipal year.
