Canoe Canada 2006

Canoe Canada 200615.07.2006

The 25th July will mark the start of an incredible adventure for five young people from Solihull. The team from 4th Knowle Sea Scout Group will be flying out to Canada to undertake an extended expedition in one of the most remote and untouched parts of the planet: Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in North West Ontario. The park is over 2,000 square miles in size, parts of it have yet to be explored, and access to it is by air or water only. The team will be venturing through it by both canoe and foot and carrying everything they need to survive with them.

One of the aims of the expedition is to undertake a series of environmental projects to assist the government in protecting the flora and fauna within the park. To prepare, the Sea Scouts have undertaken a great deal of training, involving practice expeditions, first aid, survival skills, canoeing, and even how to respond to a bear attack. The expedition will contribute to their Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award, and they then hope to go on to become Queen's Scouts.

Following the expedition, the team will be recovering in Toronto where they have planned a helicopter flight over Niagara Falls. The team have spent the past year fundraising for the venture, and they are very grateful to the many local companies, organisations and individuals that have provided support to help them. Further information about the venture can be found here
